Artist Bio
Lisa Young is an abstract expressionist painter in St. Louis, Missouri, exploring themes of interconnectedness. The yin yang of opposing yet complimentary forces weaves its way into the shapes and lines of her paintings, which often show up as elements of nature, human figures, or explorations of science and language.
Educated as a poet, always reading, journaling and singing, Young has filled her life with words. As a massage therapist for over 20 years, she has also cultivated a practice of silence, connecting with clients through intuition and healing touch in a place beyond words.
Painting provides another outlet for her to be guided and to communicate beyond words. She approaches each canvas as a moving meditation, trusting in the process to bring forth each image and message.
Young began painting in 2012, as she approached her 40th birthday. She prefers to paint in acrylic with foam brushes, palette knives and household objects, to keep her style loose and explorative. Recent works have included the layering of language in mixed media with acrylic pen, oil pastels, and paper.
She is currently painting a collection based on her original poem “In Times of Tyranny”, as well as preparing her 2026 solo exhibition for the WashU Farrell Learning and Teaching Center, "Stardust: At Home in the Wide Universe”, which explores our human place in the cosmos.
